Pitfalls
Severity-ranked pitfalls for hauling event gear in the RV, per item and system-wide.
Research date: 2026-09-24 Scope: Pitfalls for 5 travel/event gear items in an RV context: electric fat-tire trike, drone, RC car, LED kite, ~24” low-power smart TV. Vehicle context: 2014 Ford E350 cutaway shuttle-bus RV conversion (5.4L V8, Class 3, GVWR 10,050–11,500 lb chassis range). Power: 3× ECO-WORTHY Cubix100 48V 100Ah LiFePO4 = 14.4 kWh, 5 kW inverter, 30A shore, solar pending. Lives in desert: Burning Man/BRC, Saguaro Man, regional burns, RTR, 14 music festivals. Key driver: playa (Black Rock City playa) = alkaline, abrasive, electrified dust; desert = heat; events = crowd, regulation, theft, and wind.
This file catalogs what goes wrong with these five gear items, ranked by severity, with a prevention checklist. Every regulatory claim is verified against 2026 sources. Stale or uncertain items tagged VERIFY.
Kill-or-Buy Verdicts (read first)
| Item | Verdict | One-line reason |
|---|---|---|
| Drone | SKIP (for event use) | BRC/Saguaro Man/regional burns all ban unregistered drones; BRC 2026 registration closed → confiscation. ~0 usable event days. 12 |
| E-trike | BUY ONLY if Class 1/2, ≤750W, ≤20 mph, working pedals | BRC Gate confiscates pedal-less electric trikes (BLM-classified motor vehicles). Most marketed “fat-tire trikes” violate this. 34 |
| RC car | BUY, treat as consumable | No regulatory ban, huge fun, but playa dust kills exposed drivetrains; budget for rebuilds or choose sealed brushless. 5 |
| LED kite | BUY — best cost:payoff | ~$20-50, unregulated by FAA under 5 lb, plays perfectly at night events; only wind/line discipline needed. 6 |
| 24” TV | BUY — prefer native DC (12/24V) model | 20-35W draw; DC version lets the 5 kW inverter stay OFF, killing ~0.5-1.2 kWh/day phantom idle. 78 |

2. Regulatory & Legal Pitfalls
2.1 Drone — Banned at Every Burn You Attend (2026 verified)
What goes wrong: Drone confiscated at BRC Gate or on-playa; wasted $500-1500 purchase. Why: Burning Man requires pre-registration to fly in BRC; the 2026 application is closed, and the survival guide states plainly: unregistered drone = leave it at home; unpermitted flying = confiscation. FPV is banned outright. BRC sits within 5 mi of 88NV (Black Rock City Municipal Airport), so the BRC registration process is also the FAA 5-mile airport notification. 19 Saguaro Man 2026: no personal drones at all (Lake Cochise migratory bird stop). 2 Regional burns follow suit — check each event’s drone policy before packing. How to avoid: Do NOT budget a drone for event/playa photography. It gets ~0 usable days across BRC + Saguaro + regionals. Fly a drone only on non-event days, in open BLM/boondock areas, away from people.
2.2 Drone — FAA Rules Even Where Allowed (2026 verified)
What goes wrong: $1,100+ civil penalties for unregistered drone, no TRUST, missing Remote ID, flying over people at a festival. 10 Why (FAA 2026): Recreational flying = Exception for Limited Recreational Operations: TRUST test (free, online), register >250g drones ($5/3 yr), Remote ID compliance, visual line of sight, ≤400 ft in Class G, LAANC authorization in controlled airspace, night flying per CBO guidelines. Default assumption when over crowds/events (festival photography): Part 107 — remote pilot cert + per-drone $5 registration + over-people rules. 1011 How to avoid: If a drone is owned anyway: TRUST + register + label + Remote ID before any flight. At any festival/burn/event: assume no-fly unless the event’s policy page explicitly permits. Music festivals with crowds + drone = both event-ban and FAA over-people problem. Don’t fly at RTR either — 5,000+ people concentrated.
2.3 Kite — FAA Part 101 (mostly a non-issue, verify weight)
What goes wrong: Kite over 5 lb flagged at 500 ft or within 5 mi of airport → FAA violation; night kite unlit → hazard. Why: 14 CFR Part 101 Subpart B applies only to kites over 5 lb flown on line. Limits: <500 ft AGL, ≥3 mi visibility, ≥5 mi from any airport boundary, night operations require the kite + lines lighted. Unshielded kites >150 ft need 24-hr ATC notice. 6 How to avoid: Buy an LED kite under 5 lb (all consumer LED kites qualify) → Part 101 does not apply. BRC is within 5 mi of 88NV, so if you ever get a >5 lb kite, it’s illegal there; stay under 5 lb and this whole section evaporates. Night flying: LED-lit kite already satisfies the lighting intent; keep lines off roads. 6
2.4 E-Trike — BRC Class Rules Are the Purchase-Decider (2026 verified)
What goes wrong: Gate refuses the trike (or it sits in unsecured D-lot all week); $1,500-3,000 purchase with no playa use. Why (2026 BRC Vehicle Rules): Allowed e-bikes must meet ALL: Class 1 or 2 only (≤20 mph), 2-4 wheels, fully functioning pedals, motor ≤750W, electric only. Pedal-less “fat-tire trikes”/mopeds/scooters are classified by the BLM as motor vehicles under the BRC use permit → disallowed unlicensed, ejected if ridden. DMV explicitly warns about vendor ads selling “Burning Man perfect” scooters — scams that get turned away at the Gate. 34 How to avoid: Before buying ANY e-trike, check the spec sheet against all four criteria — Class 2, ≤750W rated motor, ≤20 mph, and working pedals that drive the wheels. Many market trikes (e.g., ~123 lb Addmotor Grandtan class; HJM TriHauler 750W/20 mph) are borderline — read the fine print; a throttle-only trike is disqualifying. Also: BRC speed limit is 5 mph for everyone; speeding = bike + rider eviction. 3412
2.5 RC Car — No Airspace Rule, But Event Policy Applies
What goes wrong: Event staff confiscate the RC car for noise/hazard; or it hits a person/dog and you’re liable. Why: No FAA/national regulation for ground RC, but every event reserves the right to ban anything that injures participants. At wildlife-adjacent venues (Saguaro Man — Lake Cochise birds), staff may cite wildlife disturbance. 2 How to avoid: Ask the event before bringing; run in open dirt away from crowds, art, dogs, and solar arrays (a runaway RC car is a missile for panels and ankles). Speed limiting mode on for crowded environments.
3. Dust & Environment Pitfalls
3.1 Playa Dust — Alkaline, Abrasive, Invades Everything
What goes wrong: White chalky dust wrecks motors, bearings, controllers, camera gimbals, RC drivetrains. It’s not “dirt” — it’s alkaline (pH ~10), abrasive, and electrostatic; it gets into sealed crevices, dries out rubber, and corrodes terminals. 513 Why: Playa dust is fine sodium carbonate/alkali silt. On e-bikes it cakes drivetrain, eats bearing seals, seizes display buttons, and dries/cracks tires. On RC cars it laps into brushed motors (the exposed brush/commutator design is a dust magnet) and servo gears. On drones/DSLRs: gimbal re-calibration errors and sensor dust. 51314 How to avoid:
- Sealed everything on the trike: sealed bearing hubs, sealed motor (geared hub > open mid-drive), dust-protected display/controller — “not optional luxuries, survival requirements” per playa e-bike operators. 5
- RC: brushless (sealed can vs open brushed) + sealed bearings + inner body shell (ARRMA-style dirt-proofing). Dusty playa = expose and blow out with air compressor daily; don’t run in whiteout. 15
- Cleanup protocol (trike/bike): dry-brush FIRST — playa dust hardens into cement when wetted, making washing impossible. Then mild soap + lukewarm water, low pressure only (never spray electricals). Post-event: inspect battery terminals for corrosion, refresh tire sealant, re-grease bearings. 13
- Drone/electronics: never swap lenses/batteries in the wind; bag between flights; gimbal lock engaged at all times when not flying. 14
3.2 Heat — The Real Battery Killer at Desert Events
What goes wrong: Permanent, irreversible capacity loss — not just reduced range for the day. Damage accumulates and does not recover when temps drop. 16 Why: Li-ion cells degrade above ~95°F and get permanently damaged above ~104°F. A vehicle parked on a 100°F day hits 116°F cabin in one hour — beyond safe storage temp for e-trike/RC/LED-kite batteries. Direct sun on a battery blackens it further. 1617 How to avoid: Remove batteries from the trike/car while parked and store them inside the bus in a cooler part (still shaded). Never charge in direct sun or during peak heat hours (noon-4pm); let a hot battery cool before charging. Ideal storage 50-77°F; charge ≥104°F ambient = no. 161718
3.3 Wind — Kites, Drones, and Dust Storms
What goes wrong: LED kite shredded in playa gusts; drone tossed into the playa; whiteout buries gear in dust. Why: Playa wind routinely 20-30+ mph with gusts; consumer kites (polyester + fiberglass) are tuned for 5-15 mph. Drones are flight controllers, not wind machines — gusts near the deck cause tip-overs. 1920 How to avoid: Kite: fly 8-20 mph winds only; below 8 mph it won’t launch, above ~20 mph you’re feeding it to the playa. Drones: fly only in calm windows (dawn/dusk at events), never in whiteout. When not flying, tether or pack everything — whiteout gusts relocate unattended gear.
3.4 Cold Nights — Charge Curves and Range
What goes wrong: Lithium batteries lose significant capacity below ~40°F; charging below 32°F damages cells permanently (plating). Why: Desert nights (Oct-Apr events, RTR January) drop to 30-45°F. Charging a cold pack forces lithium plating → capacity loss and elevated fire risk. 1621 How to avoid: Warm batteries indoors before charging; don’t charge overnight in an unheated bus at <32°F ambient. Keep trike battery inside (also an anti-theft move). Our LiFePO4 house bank derates below freezing too — the e-trike/RC packs are the same story.
4. Battery & Charging Pitfalls
4.1 LiPo/Li-ion Fire Inside the Bus — The Big One
What goes wrong: Thermal runaway in a habitable RV = violent fire, toxic fumes, you and dogs trapped; micro-mobility devices are the #1 lithium-fire category in Phoenix Fire incident data. 2223 Why: RC/drone/e-trike batteries are LiPo/NMC (high energy density, flammable electrolyte) — NOT the safer LiFePO4 of the house bank. Fire agencies attribute most fires to human error: unattended charging, incompatible chargers, charging in beds/sofas, charging hot/damaged packs. 61% of Phoenix lithium fires were not charging at ignition — a damaged pack can fail parked. 222324 How to avoid (bundle):
- Charge LiPo/Li-ion in a fire-retardant bag or metal box, on a non-flammable surface, never on the bed/couch/carpet. 2425
- Never charge unattended or overnight while sleeping. 2223
- Use ONLY the manufacturer charger for the specific pack; inspect pack for puffing, tears, heat, odd smell before every charge. 2224
- Don’t charge the trike battery inside the bus at all if avoidable (charge at the ramp/outside); if unavoidable, keep it beside the door with the exit path clear, smoke alarm near, and never overnight. 2324
- Damaged/dropped/punctured pack = quarantine outside, do NOT charge, dispose properly. 2324
4.2 Charging Multiple Large Batteries From a 14.4 kWh Bank
What goes wrong: Depleting the house bank past comfortable reserves on a cloudy stretch; or tripping inverter/shore breaker when 2-3 chargers fire up together. 26 Reality check (verified numbers):
- E-trike 48V 20Ah pack ≈ 960 Wh full charge (≈7% of the 14.4 kWh bank, before inverter loss). 26
- E-bike chargers run 100-240W each (48V @ 2-4A). RC LiPo charger 3-4S at 2C ≈ 200-400W. TV ≈ 30W. 827
- Total worst-case simultaneous: trike (240W) + RC (400W) + TV (30W) ≈ 670W AC ≈ 800W DC ≈ 5.5A @ 120V — trivial for a 5 kW inverter on 3× 100Ah 48V. One full trike charge/day + gear ≈ 1.2-1.5 kWh/day; Starlink already budgets ~1 kWh/day. Fine on solar/pending array; tight on 3 cloudy days. 262728 The real gotcha — inrush: e-bike chargers have big input capacitors; a 230W-average charger can stall a small/weak inverter on plug-in surge (documented on 1,000W units). Pure-sine 5 kW handles it, but plug sequence matters: charger into inverter → inverter ON → then connect battery to charger. 27 How to avoid: Sequence charging (trike morning, RC midday, battery is a bucket — the bank absorbs everything at under 800W). Track Wh on the shunt. On 30A shore: everything above plugs in plus bank charging = fine (30A = 3,600W). Keep a hard-on/off for the inverter to kill phantom draw. 262728
4.3 Storage Voltage — Storage-Charge the Packs
What goes wrong: LiPo stored fully charged for weeks → swelling, capacity loss, eventual puff → fire risk at next charge. Why: Full-voltage storage is the #1 pack degrader per university/industry guidance; storage target ~3.8V/cell (~60% SOC), balance-charged. 2529 How to avoid: RC/drone packs: storage-charge after every event, keep in hardcase packs, store in LiPo bag in a cool drawer. E-trike: store 40-80% (not full) between trips; top up before the ride. 1629
5. Physical & Logistics Pitfalls
5.1 E-Trike Weight vs Bus Payload and Hitch (VERIFY numbers)
What goes wrong: Rack failure on the highway; no compatible hitch on a shuttle-bus conversion; rear GAWR overload. Why: Fat-tire e-trikes run 100-130+ lb (e.g., Addmotor Grandtan ~123 lb). Dedicated e-trike hitch racks: capacity 200-250 lb, rack itself 50-95 lb, need a 2” receiver. E350 cutaway chassis: GVWR 10,050-11,500 lb, towing 8,450-10,000 lb when equipped — but a conversion may or may not have a 2” receiver, and tongue/rack loads count against rear GAWR. 303132 How to avoid (VERIFY): Confirm the bus actually has a 2” receiver rated ≥250 lb tongue (many shuttle conversions have none — add one, cheap). Pick a 200 lb-class trike rack with ramps (loading an 120 lb trike overhead is a back injury). Total rack+trike ≈ 170-220 lb — well under E350 payload, fine for GAWR, but check the receiver rating. 3031
5.2 Trike Storage Inside the Bus — Exit Path and Fire Blockage
What goes wrong: A 6-7 ft trike stored inside blocks the door/egress; in a Li-ion fire scenario you can’t get out or the trike blocks the fire-fighting path. How to avoid: Dedicate a storage spot that does NOT obstruct the exit or the battery compartment access. If the trike must live inside (which it will — playa dust + outside sun = bad), keep the battery OUT of it and stored per §4.1. Align the trike low and alongside, not across the door.
5.3 TV — Inverter Phantom Draw and Wall Mounts
What goes wrong: 24/7 AC-powered TV setup forces the 5 kW inverter to idle 24/7 → 0.5-1.2 kWh/day wasted (20-50W idle), which on cloudy days is your whole margin. Cheap TV mounts rip out of thin shuttle-bus paneling on washboard roads. Why: 24” LED TVs draw only 20-35W, but inverter idle can exceed the TV itself. Native-DC RV TVs (e.g., Sylvox 24”, 9-32V input) run straight off the 48V bus via a small DC-DC buck — no inverter needed at all. 78 How to avoid: Buy the native DC 12/24V 24” smart TV (Google TV, ~20-35W) and skip AC entirely; leave the 5 kW inverter off unless a true 120V load runs. If you already own an AC TV, add a hard-wired inverter remote switch so you’re not paying idle 24/7. Mount with an RV-rated locking mount braced to metal framing, not paneling. 7833
5.4 Theft at Events and Lots
What goes wrong: Opportunistic theft of a $1,500-3,000 e-trike or its $500-900 battery at BRC, regional burns, festival lots. Bike theft at Burning Man is real and mostly opportunistic — an unlocked trike in a theme camp is a target. 34 How to avoid: Remove and lock the battery (it’s 60% of the value). Cable/U-lock the frame to the bus or a stake even inside your camp perimeter. Mark the frame. Keep trike visible from the door; store inside the bus at night at non-burn events.
5.5 Kite Line Hazards — Night Flying Discipline
What goes wrong: Invisible or hard-to-see kite line crossing a dark playa street at night → participant trips/cuts; line into power lines or over people. How to avoid: Fly in open playa only, away from streets and crowds; keep the line short (<100 ft for night ambient); at night use glow/flag tape on the line; never fly over people, roads, or near power lines (also never retrieve a kite from power lines). Tie off, don’t hold, when not actively flying — a dropped handled reel on the playa is a trip hazard. 19
6. Prevention Checklist (ordered by matrix score)
- Drone: don’t buy for events. If owned: TRUST + $5 registration + Remote ID + cert carried; zero flights at BRC/Saguaro/regionals; fly only off-grid away from crowds (FAA over-people = Part 107). 110
- LiPo/Li-ion charging: fire-retardant bag on metal surface; manufacturer charger only; inspect pack for puff/heat/smell pre-charge; NEVER unattended or overnight; trike battery charged outdoors/at ramp when possible; smoke alarm + clear exit path; damaged pack quarantined outside. 22232425
- Heat: all portable batteries out of the hot bus at events; store 50-77°F; charge only ≤104°F ambient; never charge in direct sun; cool battery before charging. 1617
- E-trike purchase spec check (before buying): Class 1/2, ≤750W rated motor, ≤20 mph, WORKING PEDALS — all four required for BRC. 34
- E-trike dust: sealed bearings + sealed hub motor + dust-protected display; dry-brush before any wet wash; post-playa terminal inspection + re-grease. 513
- E-trike transport (VERIFY): 2” receiver rated ≥250 lb on the bus (may not exist on conversion); 200 lb-class e-trike rack with ramps; rack+trike ≈170-220 lb. 3031
- RC car: brushless + sealed bearings + inner body; hardcase LiPo; storage-charge after events; run away from crowds/art/dogs/solar; air-compressor blowout after dusty days; budget as a consumable. 51529
- Kite: <5 lb (FAA Part 101 exempt); fly 8-20 mph winds only; line away from roads/crowds/power lines; flag line at night; spare LED battery; don’t fly in whiteouts/gusts. 619
- TV: native DC 12/24V 24” smart TV (~20-35W), no inverter; or AC TV + inverter remote switch to kill idle; RV locking mount braced to framing. 7833
- Charging power budget: trike 960 Wh ≈7%/charge; RC 300-500 Wh; TV 0.5-1 kWh/day; total with Starlink ≈2-2.5 kWh/day — fine on sun, track via shunt, sequence charges; plug charger→inverter→battery. 262728
- Theft: battery removed+locked, frame cabled, trike inside at night at non-burn events. 34
- Cold: don’t charge below 32°F; warm packs before charging; trike battery sleeps inside. 21
